Dodo and boy sculpture by mumbojumbo

Dodo And Boy Sculpture by Alena Wooten, via her deviantART page.

I had the pleasure of working with the incredible Vince Nguyen here at Blue Sky on this piece! This sculpture is based on his character he designed for a children’s book. (I’ll try scanning in the drawing I used to create this scupt) I must say, these talented folks I work with in the design dept. sure keep me busy with all these “SIMPLE” designs. Hard and time consuming to sculpt, but so fun nonetheless!

And from Vince Nguyen blog, Louis and The Dodo Sculpt:

So here’s a beautiful sculpt of Louis riding a dodo bird by Alena Wooten. The character was shown in a children’s book called Louis and the Dodo. It was one of my first children’s book years ago and it’s still one of my favorite books I’ve worked on. Alena is a super star sculptor at Blue Sky Studios and I jumped at the chance to get her to sculpt anything for me.

And finally the very cute illustration with the original characters from the book Louis & the Dodo by Mark Shulman, illustrated by Vincent Nguyen:

Pickwick by akuma-neko.

This is Pickwick, the pet dodo of Thursday Next from the Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. Personally, my favourite character. Based off a drawing that I traced over in Photoshop using my tablet. (Yay! it works again!!)
I would have just coloured the drawing directly, but apparently the blue pencilcrayon I used for the under drawing wasn’t nonphoto blue.

Requiem for a Dodo

This came from a monoprint exercise- I reverse printed a typed prose, and traced in ink from beneath the plate. Same deal with the drawing.
Apparenty, my into to printmaking teacher hadn’t realized the Dodo was extinct. -And was also confounded by my process.

awk, Jim lad

awk, Jim lad. by Drew Northcott: I love dodos. Their latin name is “Didus Ineptus” which is a joyful thing. I work in the games industry, and I try to sneak a dodo in to anything I work on these days. (my last game had a dodo shaped level). Anyhow earlier in the year we were talking about a game involving pirate dodos, so here is one.

PS.: Due to technical problems on this blog – many of you may have notice – we weren’t able to celebrate the International Talk Like a Pirate Day with this great pirate dodo illustration. I hope that in some place of the world isn’t September 20th yet, because this is late dodo celebration. Check the
Talk Like a Pirate Day 2007 at Bibi’s box.
