This is the marvelous Dodo we are going to see on Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in March. Even before this image was out, I knew I was going to love the film: it has a dodo and it’s directed by Tim Burton, what makes the story a slightly darker and twisted.

The animator and designer Evan Boucher sent me a link to one of his old projects: DIGM 560: Advanced Applications in 3D Interactivity featuring Dodo’s Electrode Induced Behavior Study. You can play with the dodo checking his reactions when certain areas of his brain are stimulated, making him happy, angry, frightened or sad. Sad dodo is too sad, better keep only on the 3 previous emotions.

Dodo is incredibly simple to use: Just upload an input picture, choose between different settings that might affect the aging process (i.e. amounts of alcohol and tobacco consumed), set a year and hit generate. Obviously results will vary, but under strenuous laboratory analysis we have found a margin of error of only +-11% (unprecedented performance for time machines in general, let alone web-apps). [...] Dodo can also be used on scenery. For example, Dodo changed this scene from an ordinary spring landscape to winter, using Dodo’s built-in database of geographically accurate weather history.

Primeval is a British science fiction drama television programme produced by Impossible Pictures for ITV. [...] The series follows a team of scientists who investigate anomalies in time and deal with the ancient creatures that come through, although they are not always prehistoric. The fantastic creatures on the Episode 4 of the series are Dodos!

The Dodos created for this episode are super cute and for a while you can almost forget they aren’t real. The series production did a great work “recreating” an animal that few people saw and that we have few registries. Remember that almost all those old paintings of dodos were made after the dodos were already extinct. Super cute dodos, but The dodos were depicted as fat and clumsy, as those bought to by sailors for zoos were due to overfeeding in captivity; real wild dodos would have been somewhat slimmer than shown in the show. That means the dodos of the episode are based on dodo paintings made in Europe.

Vintage Betty Boop cartoon Betty in Blunderland, available to download at Internet Archive, and probably vaguely inspired on Alice in Blunderland, an iridescent dream. Not the best Betty Boop cartoon I’ve ever seen, however, it’s still amusing and it has a dodo. From Wikipedia:

Betty falls asleep doing a jigsaw puzzle of a white rabbit. She “awakes” just in time to follow the rabbit through the looking glass into a modern wonderland. Betty meets most of the traditional inhabitants of Wonderland and sings “How Do You Do” (to the tune of “Everyone Says I Love You”) to them. When the Jabberwocky steals Betty away, everyone comes to her rescue.

Here’s a fun game to improve your math and reading skills (both come in handy when taking tests like the SATs): Time yourself as you read the list below and calculate how many species that were still around when you began reading have since become history. (Liberals are advised to read quickly so less species are gone by the time they’re done.)
